ADS put out a call in 2012 for the best examples of creative work that explain the importance of smart energy practices and technologies to the public that were showcased at the 9th annual. Town Meeting attendees voted, and winners were chosen for the first ever National Town Meeting Awards for Excellence in Communication (aka "Griddies"). Utilities, community organizations, technology companies, and other stakeholders were invited to participate. Creative agencies and consultants were also eligible to submit new concepts or client work product with the permission of their clients.

An individual story or series that integrates energy efficiency, demand response, price incentives, and grid modernization as part of a larger smart energy vision. Submissions should reflect local vision drivers and priorities. Production styles may be animated, live action, or documentary.
