In July 2011, the Association for Demand Response & Smart Grid (ADS), along with the National Action Plan Coalition (NAPC), published a Communications Umbrella Action Guide, intended to help DR and smart grid stakeholders educate consumers about new technologies and practices, why they are being deployed, and what the benefits are to them.

Intended as a reference tool to be used on an as-needed basis, the Guide is designed to support communications specialists and program managers at utilities, consumer advocacy groups, public service commissions, technology companies and service providers, consultants, and trade groups involved in co-creating a sustainable energy future with consumers.

On this Webinar, entitled "Smart Grid – Different Messages for Different Customers" on Thursday, January 12 at 1pm EST, the Guide's author and guest experts provided insights into the report, along with new and supplemental information about how it can help your organization achieve its goals.

Webinar Description:
This Webinar walked you through what is in the Guide, how it can be used most effectively, and provided examples of how these ideas are in use at leading organizations today.

What you took away from this Webinar:
  • You learned about the research and conceptual thinking that informed the strategies.
  • You learned about which communication strategies are consistently proving to be effective across the country.
  • You came away with specific messages and value propositions that are compelling to each of the different customer segments.
Speakers:
  • Judith Schwartz, To the Point
  • Lisa Magnuson, Silver Spring Networks
  • Nikolas Rechtiene, SMUD
  • Justin Segall, Simple Energy
Among the insights we shared are the following:
  • Why we need "next practices," not just "best practices."
  • Why energy worldviews are such powerful tool.
  • Why energy literacy education needs to begin inside stakeholder organizations.
  • What common elements should be part of every communications and energy literacy program.
  • Why vision drivers must be tailored to the priorities and social norms of the region.
  • What value propositions will be appealing to distinct customer groups.
  • Why low income customers are not a monolithic group who will all respond to the same value proposition.
  • What messages will actually be appealing to those most concerned about privacy and "big brother."
  • Why DR and Smart Grid need to be integrated into a comprehensive communications and outreach strategy.
